PEEK vs POM: when is the expensive material actually cheaper?

PEEK costs roughly 20 times more per kilogram than POM — yet on a part-cost basis it often wins. Here is how to run the comparison properly, including the downtime maths most buyers forget.

PEEK vs POM: when is the expensive material actually cheaper?

There is one question buyers ask us more than any other: 'is PEEK worth it?' The honest answer is that comparing price per kilogram is the wrong test. You have to compare cost per part, per year, per line.

Take a conveyor wear strip. POM at 12 mm thick may last six months in a dry, dusty environment. PEEK in the same position can run several years — but it costs twenty times more per kilo. If the strip needs a two-hour line stop to change, and the line earns 2,000 EUR an hour, the change-out cost alone is 4,000 EUR. Suddenly the material price is a rounding error.

The calculation changes completely when temperature enters the picture. Above 120 C continuous, unfilled POM begins to lose stiffness and creep. If you are running at 140 C, POM is not a cheaper option — it is not an option at all. PPS or PEI become the floor, and PEEK the ceiling.
