NORSOK M-710 and rapid decompression: what oil and gas buyers actually test

The standard is about surviving explosive decompression in high-pressure gas service. It is a test of the material, not a certificate you can hold.

NORSOK M-710 and rapid decompression: what oil and gas buyers actually test

NORSOK M-710 is the Norwegian petroleum industry standard for qualifying non-metallic sealing materials. It is frequently written into specifications as though it were a certificate a supplier either holds or does not, which causes confusion on both sides of the enquiry.

The standard defines test methods — ageing in a range of fluids, and rapid gas decompression testing, which saturates a sample with high-pressure gas and then drops the pressure quickly to see whether the material blisters, cracks or splits. A material does not 'have' M-710; a specific grade tested under specific conditions at a specific pressure and temperature either passes or it does not, and the result applies only to that configuration.

So the useful question is not whether the material is NORSOK compliant but whether the grade has decompression test data at your service pressure and temperature in your process fluid. What we can provide is the grade data and lot traceability; where a specific qualification is required, the testing is usually carried out by an accredited laboratory on the customer's behalf, and we will supply samples and certificates to support it.
