Packing plastic stock shapes for sea freight

A container is a slow oven with a humidity problem. Here is how we pack so the material arrives straight rather than bowed.

Packing plastic stock shapes for sea freight

Plastic stock shapes are not fragile, but they do not like a sea container. Interior temperatures on a deck passage can exceed 70 C, and humidity swings between the tropics and a European winter will move any hygroscopic material.

Sheet is shipped flat, interleaved and strapped to a pallet with a full-width top and bottom board, so the load is in compression rather than bending. Standing sheet on edge unsupported is the single most common cause of a bowed delivery — a 20 mm POM panel left vertical for six weeks will remember it.

Rod is bundled in hexagonal packs with end caps, because the cut ends are where chipping happens. Nylon and POM get a moisture barrier wrap; PEEK, PEI, PPS and PTFE do not need one. If you are receiving into a freezer or a dry room, tell us and we will pack for that transition instead.
