Where our lead times actually come from

Two days for stock shapes, two to three weeks for a machined batch, six weeks if the grade is not on the shelf. Knowing the boundary is the useful part.

Where our lead times actually come from

A lead time with no explanation is just a number, so here is the breakdown of where ours come from.

Stock shapes cut to size are typically two working days. The material is on the floor, the nesting is done at quotation, and the constraint is machine time. Complex nesting or a large number of small pieces will push it to four or five days.

Machined components run two to three weeks for a first article, depending on the number of set-ups, then faster for repeats once the programme is proven. If the grade is not a stocked item, add four to six weeks for the mill, and note that a mill order may carry a minimum quantity — which is often the real decision point, because on an uncommon grade the minimum can be larger than the annual requirement. We will always tell you whether a close alternative is in stock before you commit to a mill order.
